JOURNAL ARTICLE REVIEW ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
As an educator, it is important to remain current on research in your chosen field. One way to 
stay up to date is to review professional journals.  This requires going beyond just reading to 
critiquing and forming an opinion of the information presented. During this course, you will 
complete a Journal Article review of an article focusing on educating students with intellectual 
disabilities. In reviewing the article, you will not only summarize what is said but you will also 
determine the author’s intended purpose, examine the evidence presented and come to a 
conclusion regarding the effectiveness of the author in presenting his/her proposition and the 
application of the results to teaching students with intellectual disabilities.
INSTRUCTIONS
For the Journal Article Review Assignment, you will select a full-text, scholarly journal article 
related to teaching students with intellectual disabilities from the Jerry Falwell Library data base, 
published in the last 5 years.
Once you locate an article, read it through as many times as needed to obtain a full 
understanding.
Use a professional writing style. The Journal Article Review Assignment needs to be double 
spaced and written in Times New Roman, 12 pt font. It should follow the format described 
below.
1. Write the article citation at the top of the review in current APA format.
2. Write a one page summary of the article. Include the purpose, how any research was 
conducted, the results and any other pertinent information.   
3. Write a one page reflection critiquing the article by discussing the implications of the 
results of the study, or the information presented. This should include how the author 
could expand on the results, what the information means in the big picture and what the 
focus should be for future related research.Express your opinion of the article and 
research findings. 
4. Be sure to cite any direct quotes or paraphrases from the article using current APA 
format.
