For inspiration, read My Summer of Scooping Ice Cream by Shonda Rhimes (140-142) in which she describes her experience working in an ice cream parlor when she was a teenager. This job served as the foundation for her work ethic.  Rhimes is considered to be one of the hardest working women in show business.

If you would like more background on Shonda Rhimes, listen to her TED Talk here.

Write

In a 2-3 page essay that combines narration and description, write about a memorable experience from your youth (a job, a special vacation, an unexpected health scare,  making a new friend, etc.) that has shaped your outlook on life.  Be sure to provide specific details in your descriptions that appeal to the senses.

Refine Your Draft

Format your essay following MLA guidelines in a Microsoft Word document. You will find an example of a MLA formatted essay in your Bedford Reader textbook (671-676).

  • Important note: This example uses references and citations.  For your Essay Two, you are not required to use references, so no Works Cited page is needed.

After writing your first draft, study the Checklist for Reviewing and Revising a Description (123). Then, revise your essay following the points in this checklist, and create the final draft.
